About

My main areas of research are metaethics and broader metanormative theory, with connected interests in philosophy of law and social ontology. Overall, my work is driven by the fundamental challenge of explaining how norms can have a normative hold over us.

I am currently a postdoc in philosophy at Universität Hamburg. My less brief official title is that I am a postdoctoral researcher in the funding programme “Postdoctoral Fellowships” within the Excellence Strategy of the university. During this fellowship, I conduct an independent research project on the normativity of conventional norms. I also teach on a range of topics in philosophy at Hamburg.

In 2022 I completed my PhD in Philosophy at the universities of St Andrews, Stirling, and Groningen with a thesis titled “Demystifying Normativity: Morality, Error Theory, and the Authority of Norms”. I was supervised by Bart Streumer and Kent Hurtig (primary supervisors) as well as Justin Snedegar and Daan Evers (secondary supervisors).

During my PhD, I taught at the universities of St Andrews, Stirling, and Bayreuth. I also undertook a research internship at the Carnegie Trust for the Universities of Scotland.

Before my PhD, I completed an MLitt in Moral, Political, and Legal Philosophy at St Andrews and Stirling. My first step into philosophy was a BA in Philosophy at Leiden University, which I supplemented with the Honours College programme Expertise in Practice: Advising on Dilemmas in Society.
